THE WATCH
The 34mm IWC Portofino from the 1990s captures the understated design principles that the brand was once associated with. The 1990s was an interesting time for IWC with various novel designs such as the Da Vinci making a mark, in contrast to their marketing that is associated with a touch of ruggedness. This 1990s Portofino Ref. 3514 is an example of this, with a more restrained and classic design in the IWC line-up.
Sensibly sized at 34mm, its also a slim piece that sits close to the wrist. With a crisp white lacquer dial and its skinny applied silver markers, the watch is extremely understated but glows underneath the cuff. The watch would be suitable for so many different occasions, including day to day wear, but also for occasions that would require a bit more formality. The bracelet could easily be changed out for a leather strap to give the watch a more formal look.
The bracelet, in great condition, is very well maintained overall. These 1990s IWC bracelets are extremely well made and very underrated, and are quite iconic in their own right. While aesthetically reminiscent of many of the older vintage beads of rice bracelets, the construction is modern and remarkably sturdy. At the same time, it is light and sits comfortably on the wrist. The bracelet will comfortably fit individuals with wrists up to 7.2” with an extra link included.
The watch runs on an automatic movement, which is a base ETA2892 movement. The watch has not been tested on a timegrapher, but runs very well.
